Dennis “Denny” Ross Fry of Harlan, Iowa (formerly of Warroad, Minnesota), passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 30 days old with his wife and daughter by his side.
Denny was born to John V. and Dorothy Ann (McIntosh) Fry on December 28, 1944, in State Center, Iowa, the first of eight children. The family moved throughout his childhood and he attended seven different schools before graduating from Nevada (Iowa) High School in 1962. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years spending time at naval bases in San Diego, Rhode Island, and Key West. Denny was a very proud veteran, often going out of his way to thank other veterans for their own service.
On August 25, 1969, he married Janet Kay Fiscus. The couple originally resided in Nevada, Iowa, where they welcomed their first child, Katheryn Ann, in January of 1974. In June of 1978, the couple relocated to Warroad, Minnesota, and Denny started his 32-year career at Marvin Windows and Doors. They welcomed daughter Lisa in November 1979.
Denny was very involved in the Warroad community, serving as a City Council member, acting in several Warroad Summer Theatre productions, and volunteering with the Warroad Lakers, even providing color commentary for away games on the local radio station, KQ92. Denny was strong in his faith and an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was a reader, eucharistic minister and a member of Knights of Columbus. He and Janet were also avid Warroad Warrior fans, following their daughter during her high school career and remaining “super fans” after. Fishing on Lake of the Woods and following any Minnesota sports teams were also favorite pastimes.
Denny retired in 2010 and the couple moved to Harlan, Iowa, soon after to be closer to their family and especially their three grandchildren who affectionately called him “Bop Fry”.
Denny is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet; their daughter, Lisa (Ted) Runkel; grandchildren, Hadley, Harper, and Hudson Runkel; siblings, Carol Dodge, Mike (Arlene) Fry, Connie Soesbe, Cliff (Linda) Fry, and Deb (Doug) Fry; sisters-in-law, Lynn Fry and Brenda Fiscus; brothers-in-law, Elwyn Myhre, Wade (Darlene) Fiscus, and Dale Fiscus; uncle, Clare (Mary) McIntosh; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Katheryn Ann; siblings, Richard (Dick) Fry and Sandra Myhre; and many aunts, uncles, and other extended family.
By Denny’s request, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home, Inc., Harlan, Iowa, assisted the family with arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.burmeisterjohannsen.com.
