Frederick “Fred” Herman Klahn, son of Herman Frederick and Olive Violet (Birchard) Klahn, was born on March 4, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was raised near Shelby, Iowa, and graduated from Shelby-Tennant High School in 1957. Fred worked for Fred’s Skelly and Pat’s Place, both in Shelby, for several years. He was later employed by REM Leadway in Council Bluffs for more than 20 years, doing building maintenance.

On August 6, 1977, Fred married Peggy Ann Hollar at the First Presbyterian Church in Shelby, and the couple made their home in Shelby.

Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shelby. He loved dogs and was an active man, enjoying bowling, fishing, classic cars, and participating in tractor pulls. Fred found much joy in watching grandkids’ sporting events, having daily coffee and joking with friends, and grilling with family and friends. Last but not least, he was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Fred H. Klahn died on Friday, February 10, 2023, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. He had reached the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 6 days.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Howard Klahn, Henry Klahn, Homer Klahn, and Stan Klahn; and three sisters, Dorothy Donaldson, Rose Shurts, and Lois Edmundson. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Peggy Klahn of Shelby, Iowa; three children, Dawn (Ron) Bauer and Dustin (Cheslie) Kirkhart, all of Shelby Iowa, and Jessica (Jason) Rold of Avoca, Iowa; six grandchildren, Nathan (Angelene) Bauer of Treynor, Iowa, Anna (Rhett) Welsh of Pensacola, Florida, Ethan Kirkhart of Harlan, Iowa, Kaeden Rold and Kavin Rold, both of Avoca, Iowa, and Kylie Kirkhart of Shelby, Iowa; one great-grandchild, Sebastian Bauer of Treynor, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial visitation was held on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa.
