Beverly “Bev” Dorreen Butler, the daughter of Homer Sylvester and Olive Esther (Smith) Gunion, was born on January 2, 1927, in rural Churdan, Iowa. She attended country schools and the Churdan Public School. Bev worked in the housekeeping department in the hospital in Jefferson, Iowa.

On July 20, 1945, Bev married Cyril “Cy” Thomas Butler in Jefferson. She worked as a cook at the Jefferson Public School until the couple moved to Harlan, Iowa, on January 20, 1960. Bev held several different jobs in Harlan before being employed as a clerk at Farner’s Department Store, where she worked for many years.

Bev was an excellent cook who loved treating her family and friends to good homemade food; her sugar cookies were greatly enjoyed by all. She loved all animals, wild and tame, and had a special spot in her heart for cats – she always made sure they were well fed. An especially generous person, Bev made everyone feel at home. She liked to keep up with the local news and visit with others when she was getting her hair done.

Beverly “Bev” D. Butler died on Monday, June 6, 2022, at her home in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 95 years, 5 months, and 4 days.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cyril T. Butler on May 6, 2020; one brother, Vernon Gunion; one grandson, Adam Rold; one great-grandson, Jason Hald; one great-granddaughter, Charley Falkena; and one great-great-granddaughter, Paisley Rief. She is survived by five children, Sharon (Significant Other, John Ohlinger) Blum of Woodbine, Iowa, Pamela (Lawrence) Rold of Harlan, Iowa, Connie (Woody) De Forest of Woodbine, Iowa, Tom (Diane) Butler of Harlan, Iowa, and Scott (Significant Other, Linda Stuhr) Butler of Harlan, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

The graveside service and burial was held on Friday, June 10, 2022, at the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Hank Gruver led the service. Bev’s loving grandsons and granddaughters served as casket bearers. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements. I will miss Beverly very much. She was the most caring and loving person. I will never forget coming to visit you and sitting there eating candy and watching westerns, unless there was polka dancing was on. We would have a blast making your famous sugar cookie or make a cake. I hope they have enough bologna up there. My condolences go out to all her family. She was one of a kind and will be truly missed.
