Marlys Gene Moore was on born February 28, 1931, to Adolph Edwin and Marion Geanatte (Nelson) Jahr in Mitchell County, Iowa. She attended country school until sixth grade, and then finished high school in St. Ansgar, Iowa, in 1948. She attended the LaJames College of Hairstyling in Mason City, Iowa, and began her career at a beauty shop in Osage, Iowa. After a year, she opened her own shop, Marlys’ Beauty Salon, in St. Ansgar.
On October 18, 1952, Marlys was united in marriage to Loyal Harold Moore in Mona, Iowa. To this union three children were born. Marlys sold her beauty shop and settled into raising her children. She and Loyal built homes in Garner and Emmetsburg, Iowa, before moving to Harlan, Iowa, in 1969 when Loyal became principal of the middle school. Marlys was very active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, participating in the circles and teaching Sunday School. She was also a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. Marlys was very stylish and she found working at Morey’s Clothing in Harlan was a great fit for her.
Marlys loved sewing, quilting, and knitting. Her grandchildren will cherish the afghans and baby blankets she knitted for them, their babies, and future babies. Marlys and Loyal were avid golfers and enjoyed many hours on the course in Harlan and in Arizona, where they wintered for 15 years after Loyal retired. She loved to play bridge with her friends, and was quite good at it. Marlys was an outstanding cook and baker; she was still trying new recipes up until she became ill. Her lefse, caramel rolls, and raspberry jam are legendary to her grandchildren. Most of all, Marlys loved spending time with her family, always giving advice and words of encouragement to them all.
Marlys G. Moore died on Friday, January 15, 2021, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. She reached the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 18 days.
