Jim participated in the St. Louis Cardinals training camp before returning home to farm.

On December 23, 1959, Jim married Jane Lavonne Graves at Altamont Baptist Church, rural Shelby County, Iowa. The couple first dairy farmed with Jim’s father south of Elk Horn, and in 1967, moved to the Graves Century Farm located west of Jacksonville, Iowa; he farmed this land until his death.

Jim was a member of First Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa, where he was a Deacon. He was a Veteran, having served as a member of the National Guard from 1958-1964. Jim enjoyed camping, carpentry, and doing electrical work. Serving his family, church, and community was very important to Jim.
