Phyllis Elaine Evans, the daughter of Russell P. and Rose P. (Pederson) Orth, was born on September 21, 1926, in Shelby, Iowa. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1944, and moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she studied for one year at Commercial Extension.

Phyllis married Donald Eugene Evans on August 24, 1945, at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Following her marriage, Phyllis worked at the Omaha and Council Bluffs Street Railway Company. The couple lived in Fremont, Nebraska, for 25 years where Don was parts manager at Diers Ford and Phyllis was a cashier at the TG & Y Department Store.

Following Don’s death on April 20, 1984, Phyllis returned to Shelby where she worked at the Y.B.R. Grocery Store. She later worked at Pamida in Harlan, the Shelby Dairy Queen, and the Cornstalk Restaurant in Shelby.

Phyllis was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Shelby. She was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Shelby. Phyllis was an active housewife and mother who lovingly cared for her two sons through their high school years.

Phyllis E. Evans died on Friday, March 30, 2018, at Altoona Nursing and Rehab in Altoona, Iowa. She had reached the age of 91 years, 6 months, and 9 days.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald Euguen Evans. She is survived by two sons, LeRoy (Ella) Evans of Ankeny, Iowa, and LaVerne (Linda) Evans of Walnut, Iowa; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

A private graveside service and burial was held at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa, with Pastor Heather Ploen of United Lutheran Church, Shelby, Iowa, officiating. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be left online at
