Janis Elaine Sorensen, the daughter of William Howard and Bessie Miranda (Benson) Davis, was born on April 25, 1943, in Kanawha, Iowa. She graduated high school in Chapin, Iowa, and then became a licensed beautician. Janis moved to Harlan, Iowa, where she met Lowell Sorensen; the couple married on June 21, 1964, in Chapin, Iowa. Janis worked hard, helping raise the couple’s three sons, as well as working outside their home. Through the years, she was employed at Ben Franklin, SuperValu, Pamida, CDS, and Dollar General.

Along with Lowell, Janis was a founding member of Christ’s Church in Harlan, Iowa, where she had been a member for a number of years. She loved to travel and especially liked to visit Branson, Missouri.

Janis E. Sorensen died on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa. She had reached the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 3 days.

Janis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell Sorensen, in September 2001; and her siblings, Robert, Donald, Hilda, Margie, and Darlene. She is survived by three sons,
Brad (Joanne) Sorensen, Brian Sorensen, and Brent Sorensen; four grandchildren, Emma Sorensen, Kyle Sorensen, Broc Sorensen, and Brody Sorensen; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

A family-directed Memorial Service was held on Friday, March 30, 2018, at Christ’s Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Brian Taylor officiating. Burial of ashes was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa. The Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.     /brad, Brian and Brent, we know you probably do not remember us but we lived in Harlan from 1967 to 1979 and Loren worked at Klitgaard and Petsche with your Dad. We grew very fond of your Mother and she and I share the same name, spelled differently but the same. We moved from Harlan back to Schleswig in 1979 and in the 12 years we lived in Harlan, we remember your mother always with a friendly smile and a good, encouraging word for everyone. She was very mild mannered and we remember when several of you were born, she was such a proud Mother and took very good care of you. May God grant you His eternal peace during this sorrowful time.
