John Calvin Barrett, the youngest son of Galen and Julia (Frazey) Barrett, was born on March 31, 1923, on the family farm in rural Shelby, Iowa. It was there he would live and farm most of his life. John graduated from Tennant (Iowa) High School in 1942.

On April 6, 1947, John married Helen Luverne Holdsworth at her parents’ home near Manilla, Iowa. The couple farmed his home place and raised their four children, Richard, Darrell, Phyllis, and Tim. John continued to live there following Helen’s death on May 1, 2011, until November 2013, when he became a resident of Avoca Specialty Care in Avoca, Iowa.

John was a member of the Shelby United Methodist Church in Shelby, Iowa. Next to his passion for farming, he loved to fly. He had taken flying lessons and was just short of obtaining his pilot’s license. John continued this interest in flight by building free flight model airplanes. He also enjoyed hunting and being outdoors. Following their retirement from farming, John and Helen enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel camper, seeing most of the United States.

John C. Barrett died on Friday, February 9, 2018, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 9 days.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen Luverne Barrett; two sons, Richard Barrett and Darrell Barrett; one brother, William Barrett; and two sisters, Margaret Watson and Mary Nelson. He is survived by one daughter, Phyllis (Don) Barkhaus of Altoona, Iowa; one son, Tim (LuAnn) Barrett of Shelby, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Becky Barrett of Shelby, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and other relatives and friends.
